Local History of Derby, Tasmania, Australia

Derby is a small town situated in the north-eastern part of Tasmania, Australia. The town has a rich history that dates back to the early 19th century.

Early History

The area now known as Derby was originally inhabited by the Pallittorre people, who were part of the larger North-East Nation. They lived in the area for thousands of years, relying on hunting, fishing and gathering for sustenance.

The first European settlers arrived in the area in the early 1800s. They were primarily farmers and timber cutters who established small settlements, including one known as St. Pauls that was located near the present-day town of Derby.

The Mining Boom

In the late 1800s, tin was discovered in the area, which led to a boom in mining. The first tin mine was established in 1874, and soon after, many other mines were established in the area.

The mining boom led to the rapid growth of the town. By the early 1900s, Derby had become a thriving community with a hotel, post office, schools, and a hospital.

The Flood of 1929

In 1929, a devastating flood hit the town, causing widespread damage and loss of life. The flood was caused by heavy rain that caused the St. Pauls River to overflow its banks.

The flood destroyed many homes and businesses, including the hospital and several mines. The town was left in ruins, and it took years to rebuild.

Modern Times

Today, Derby is a small but vibrant town with a population of around 200 people. It is known for its beautiful natural surroundings, including the Mount Victoria Forest Reserve and the Ringarooma River.

The town is also famous for its mountain biking trails, which attract visitors from all over the world. The trails were developed in the early 2000s and have since become a major drawcard for the town.
